Pay A Data Protection Fee?
I will get straight to the point on this thought. On the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) website, it states.
“If you run a UK company, partnership or sole proprietorship and you collect and keep data that identifies individuals then you may need to notify the Information Commissioner’s Office and pay an annual fee”
So, basically that is every business then. There are exemptions though for Public authorities, Charities and Small occupational pension schemes, but they still need to register without fee.
Fortunately, a quick check on the ICO online self-assessment tool will clarify your possible position. They have also published their ICO Guide To The Data Protection Fee for further guidance.
Now for those of you who are thinking we’ll dodge this legislation, just remember that your business is registered with other governmental bodies and a quick cross reference should never be ruled out.
